What I can do for you at 16-18

A-levels and equivalent qualifications introduce new ways of thinking along with large quantities of material to learn. I work with many students at this stage who need a little extra discussion time, or a closer look at their essays or translations, to make things ‘click’. My aim is always to work with you to identify the areas that will benefit most from tutoring intervention, so we can take the opportunity to build secure, lasting knowledge from the bottom up, without rushing or leaving questions unanswered. For students targeting higher grades, I offer the one-to-one time needed to hone in on the fine details that make the difference at the top end. Whatever your level and goals, I can help you design a study plan, and identify priorities that will set you up for success.

Grades are important, but to me, they shouldn’t be the only purpose of tutoring. I always create a stimulating environment for exploration of the classical world and languages, where your questions and interests take first priority.

Sessions that work for you

One of the biggest advantages of tutoring is that every moment is focussed on what you need to cover to succeed. Maybe you already know what that is, in which case I’m ready to work to your plan. But many of my tutees appreciate my help identifying areas to focus on and designing a plan to to get you where you need to be. By talking to you about your experience, hopes, and frustrations, as well as assessing you informally with materials suitable to your level and specification, I can design a unique plan of action to take you toward your goals and beyond, wherever you are now.

What about marking and assessment?

Working towards an A-level or equivalent means lots of exam-style practice. If you want work marked as part of your tutoring, you have several options. A great one is for us to go through your work in the session so we can discuss how to get the marks and clear up any confusion. Other times, you might prefer to have work marked and returned, something you can book in addition to your session. Finally, you might be looking just to get some marking done without any tutoring, and that’s absolutely possible too. For more about my marking rates, take a look at my pricing structure.

Taking Classics further at 16-18

Tutoring at this level can also be a great choice for students who are looking to stretch themselves and explore the classical world beyond the syllabus. I have the wide subject knowledge and the passion to guide your own studies, whether that means regular meetings to discuss and debate, or occasional pointers to suggested reading. I relish seeing my students come across an idea or text that fires their passion, and I’m so often amazed by the ideas and questions I encounter in return.

Thinking about Classics at uni?

If you’re considering studying Classics at a higher level, tutoring can be a great opportunity to access ideas and resources that will prepare you for university study, and contribute to making a great application. With classroom time usually dominated by the demands of the syllabus, it can be tricky to carve a path for yourself into the next level of Classical scholarship — that’s where I can help.
