Get off to the best start in Classics

Starting out with ancient languages can be a challenge: classical subjects are often started later than others, and they can involve getting to grips with a whole new way of thinking. With my help, you can build your understanding from the ground up, taking the time you need to feel fully comfortable with new material.

Equally, I offer keen younger classicists work and discussion that genuinely stretches and engages them, whether that means getting ahead or exploring new areas, languages, or texts. I’ve also got a track record of helping students at this stage achieve highly in examinations for scholarships.

What I can do for you at 11-14

I always design my tutoring around my student’s particular needs, which we’ll discuss fully before getting started, and keep an eye on as we progress. I have found that many key stage three students aren’t given quite the classroom time and attention they need. For some, this means that one-to-one engagement can really help to grasp the essential concepts of a new language or area of study. For others, I can provide much-needed stretch and development beyond the curriculum, to ensure classical studies can blossom into a true passion.

Whatever your or your child’s situation, and however we work together, my aim is always to bring more enjoyment and attainment within reach. Classics should be a joy, and not a chore: my job is to inculcate the skills and understanding that make that the case.

Scholarships and school entrance exams

Scholarship exams tend to go well beyond the level normally expected of younger students, calling for a thorough knowledge and quick thinking, so it can be a great idea to get some help and guidance. I offer full assessment of a student’s current strengths and weaknesses, which allows me to design a custom route to wider and more precise knowledge. We’ll go over exam skills and techniques, mark your work together to see how to improve, and go through advanced concepts in the detail you need to use and apply them.

With my help to extend and hone his Latin skills, a previous student successfully won a competitive scholarship at a major public school. Though I can never promise results, especially with competitive exams, I can help you set yourself up for success.

Classics for fun

I also take clients of any age who are looking for some help getting into, or back into, Classics. Whether you’re an absolute beginner looking for a guide, or an auto-didact in need of some marking support, I would be thrilled to facilitate your journey with Classics. We can take our time to explore what grabs your interest, and work towards the skills you want to cultivate. I charge Classics for fun at my lowest rate, the same as KS3 students.

My help for non-school classicists can take any number of forms, from intensive, regular tutoring sessions to occasional marking and advice. We’ll discuss how I can best help you in our free meeting.
